How to Compiz + AIGLX on Ubuntu Edgy

My Chipset is Intel D845GVSR. The Compiz works fine with my chipset. Just fallow these steps to install compiz+aiglx in Ubuntu Edgy. This guide should work for all (many of) Intel boards , if you are screwed up after fallowing this guide iam not responsible ;)

By the way, i don’t like beryl. The animation that beryl has sucks. I love compiz.

1. Add repositories ( add this line to /etc/apt/sources.list )

deb http://gandalfn.club.fr/ubuntu edgy stable

2. Import GPG Keys ( Enter this in terminal )

  • gpg –keyserver hkp://wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net –recv-keys 0x483170E9
  • gpg –export -a 0x483170E9 | sudo apt-key add –

3. Upgrade your system ( Enter this in terminal )

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

4. Install compiz packages ( Enter this in terminal )

sudo apt-get install gnome-compiz-manager compiz compiz-gnome

5. Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file before modifying it.

  • sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup

6. Modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

  • Delete your “Module” Section

(Note: The Module Section looks like this,

before modify …

Section "Module"

Load "i2c"

Load "bitmap"

Load "ddc"

Load "dri"

Load "dbe"

Load "extmod"

Load "freetype"

Load "glx"

Load "int10"

Load "type1"

Load "vbe"

  • Add these lines in the place of your Module Section
Section "Module"
Load "bitmap"

Load "ddc"

Load "dbe"

Load "dri"

Load "extmod"

Load "freetype"

Load "glx"

Load "int10"

Load "type1"

Load "vbe"

EndSection

  • Add this line in “Device” Section
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"

(Note: You can add this line anywhere in “Device” Section)

  • Add this lines at the end in xorg.conf file

 

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "true"
EndSection

  • And Make sure you have these lines
Section "DRI"
Mode    0666
EndSection

7. Restart gdm (Enter this in terminal)

  • sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

8. You can add compiz to run at startup

  • Open System > Preferences > Sessions
  • goto Startup Tab
  • Click Add button , enter compiz-tray-icon , click ok & close it.

9. Completed. Enjoy using compiz. :)

Troubleshooting:

If your xorg fails…

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    The above instructions worked on my Sony TX3 ubuntu Edgy. I skipped the Import GPG Keys part which for some reason wasn’t required for me.

    I notice that the maximised windows (normal ones are ok) do not appear on the workspace switcher when GL Desktop is running, does anyone else notice it too?
